How does the queen move in chess?
Straight lines and diagonals, any number of squares. A rook and a bishop in one piece — but still no jumping.
What goes wrong when you teach it
Queen-only chess. Given the strongest piece first, children move nothing else for months and stop improving, because every problem looks like a queen problem. Teaching the queen third — after the rook and the bishop — makes her a combination rather than a new rule, and keeps the other pieces in play.
How to explain it
Teach the queen after the rook and the bishop, never before. Then it needs no new rule at all: "she does both." Children who meet the queen first tend to move nothing else for a year.
What to expect at each age
| Age | What a child can do with the queen |
|---|---|
| 4–6 | A four-year-old can use the queen as a faster rook and will not miss the diagonals. |
| 7+ | By seven the queen's value, and the cost of losing her early, can actually be discussed. |
The ten steps we teach it in
This is the actual sequence from the Chezzo app — the 10 lessons of Queen World, in order, exactly as a child hears them. It works just as well with a real board and no app at all.
- This is the queen — she slides every way! Straight up to the star!
- The queen slides on slanted lines too. Reach the star!
- Two stars, one big slide each way!
- That star needs two slides. Mix straight and slanted!
- A friend is in the way! Even the queen cannot jump. Go around!
- The queen captures like she moves. Catch the pawn!
- Two pawns to catch. The queen is fast!
- Three pawns! Slide, slide, slide!
- A little maze! Find the free road to the star.
- The royal feast! Catch every pawn.
The queen is worth roughly nine pawns, more than a rook and a bishop together, and beginners lose her early by chasing checkmate with her alone. If that is happening, the fix is not a lecture — it is playing a few games without a queen at all.
Practise the queen on a real board
- Each piece gets its own world, in the order on this page
- The child moves the piece themselves — an illegal move simply will not go
- Spoken aloud, so a pre-reader needs no help from you
